Research for a sustainable future
At Nyenrode Business University we conduct research for a sustainable future, where a thriving society can operate within planetary boundaries and flora & fauna can flourish.
Strongly committed to academic research with impact
As an academic institution, academic research is crucial to our license to operate, and as a business university, our research should have a measurable impact on society. This is reflected in Nyenrode’s mission: ‘serving society by shaping responsible leaders for a sustainable future’.
“Academic research is crucial to our license to operate as it fuels innovation and brings about meaningful change in society.
Through global collaboration and publication, our research resonates far beyond our campuses, shaping the future for individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide.”
Prof. Dr. Bo van de Rhee
Research Director
Integrating academic research and teaching
To shape responsible leaders, we believe in training students and participants in academic thinking, which is in high demand in today’s world where truth and facts are increasingly blurred. To be able to train academics, our faculty are active researchers who apply their research into their teaching.
Nyenrode Business University has always enjoyed a strong link with the industry and in that capacity, we have served society since the University was founded ‘for business, by business’ in 1946. To showcase the impact we have had, we introduced the Nyenrode Impact Cases in the Spring of 2020.
Research with real life impact
Impact Cases represent a portfolio of research around a central theme with an impact on society in the broadest sense of the word.
Impact cases should include the 5 I's:
- Information: what is the research about?
- Innovation: what’s new?
- Impetus: over what period was the impact realized?
- Influence: how many stakeholders were reached?
- Impact: how did stakeholders change their behavior?
Here, we proudly present an example of our research with impact. Curious about our other impact cases? Make sure to read them here.
Rights of Nature
Tineke Lambooy, Professor of Corporate Law, is a forerunner in the globally innovative trend of giving rights to nature.
Inspired by her research a municipality in the south of the Netherlands decided to grant rights to natural objects and entities.
She elaborates on her research in this video.
Our research areas
We conduct multi-disciplinary research that solves challenging organizational problems. We do this in three Research Collaboration Areas.
Accountability, Governance & Law
To support public and private actors in creating trust in the economic, financial, and political systems.
Entrepreneurship & Responsible Leadership
To pave the way for a new era of entrepreneurial ventures and visionary leadership guided by principles of purpose, responsibility, and sustainability.
Markets, Organizations & People
To create the ability to deal with drastic changes and wicked problems that make ‘business as usual’ no longer an option.
